In a bold move signaling a new chapter for football in Pakistan, the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has officially appointed Peruvian football legend Nolberto Solano as the head coach of the Pakistan U23 national team. The appointment is part of a broader long-term plan, with Solano expected to eventually take charge of the national team, a progression that marks one of the most ambitious coaching hires in the nation’s footballing history.
The announcement was made through an official press release by the PFF under the leadership of President Mohsen Gilani, who hailed the appointment as a “landmark moment” for Pakistan football. The federation highlighted Solano’s extensive international experience and dedication to youth development as key reasons behind the decision.
“This appointment reflects our commitment to transforming Pakistan football through world-class expertise and bold decision-making,” stated the PFF in its release.
A Legend with Global Pedigree
Nolberto “Ñol” Solano, widely regarded as one of Peru’s most iconic footballers, carries a distinguished football résumé both on and off the pitch. He was the first Peruvian to play in the English Premier League, making his mark at Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and later West Ham United. His club career also includes a spell at Argentina’s legendary Boca Juniors, where he played alongside the great Juan Román Riquelme.
Internationally, Solano earned 95 caps for the Peru national team, scoring 20 goals, and later transitioned into coaching with equal determination. Most notably, he was part of the Peruvian national team’s coaching staff that helped the country qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup—their first in 36 years—and reach the final of the 2019 Copa América, where they finished runners-up to Brazil.
Philosophy of Fearless Football
Solano is known not just for his technical prowess, but also for his commitment to attacking, high-intensity football and youth development—qualities that align with the PFF’s vision of creating a sustainable football ecosystem in the country. His appointment is expected to invigorate the national setup, particularly at the U23 level, where Pakistan will compete in upcoming international competitions.
“With Solano’s unmatched expertise, leadership, and passion for youth development, Pakistan football is set for a new era of growth and success,” the federation added.
Recruitment Drive in Progress
Alongside the headline-grabbing Solano announcement, the PFF has also begun advertising for other key positions, including a Technical Director for the Senior National Team. The recruitment process for these roles is currently underway, as the federation looks to build a comprehensive and technically sound football structure.
For now, the message from the PFF is clear: Pakistan football is ready to turn the page.
