Pakistan’s youth football setup has entered a crucial phase as head coach Shehzad Anwar named a 26-player preliminary squad for the upcoming SAFF U-20 Championship, set to take place in Maldives from March 23 to April 3.

Final Camp Underway in Islamabad

The squad was selected following intensive trials and training sessions at Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad, with the ongoing camp expected to refine combinations and tactical structure before the final roster is announced.

Pakistan have been drawn in Group B alongside regional rivals India and Bangladesh. The campaign begins against Bangladesh on March 24, followed by a high-stakes clash against India two days later.

Only the top two teams from the group will advance to the semi-finals, making every match decisive.

A Blend of Regions and Talent

The squad reflects a diverse geographical spread, featuring players from across Pakistan including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, پنجاب, سندھ, بلوچستان, as well as overseas-based prospects.

The goalkeeping unit includes Zulqurnain, Adil Ali Khan, Kashif and Ghulam Abbas, while the defensive line is anchored by names like Umar Javed, Zarib Haider and Waseem Abdul Rasheed.

In midfield, players such as Zain Imran and Ali Zafar are expected to play a central role, while the attack will rely on forwards like Najeeb Ullah and Abdul Samad.

Building for the Future

Speaking on preparations, Anwar emphasized the importance of balance and cohesion within the squad. The coaching staff is focused on creating a competitive unit capable of matching the intensity of regional opponents.

The tournament represents not just a competition, but a key step in rebuilding Pakistan’s youth pipeline — an area that has long suffered due to inconsistent structures and limited exposure.
