Pakistan U-20 Fall to Bangladesh in SAFF Championship Opener

Malé, Maldives: Pakistan’s campaign at the 2026 SAFF Men’s U-20 Championship began on a disappointing note as they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Bangladesh in their Group B opener at the National Football Stadium.

Second-Half Double Sinks Pakistan

The match remained goalless at halftime, but Bangladesh found their cutting edge in the second half through debutant Ronan Sullivan, who scored twice to seal victory.

Sullivan broke the deadlock in the 54th minute with a freekick that slipped past Pakistan goalkeeper Kashif. He then doubled the lead in the 67th minute, heading home to put the result beyond doubt.

Pakistan Struggle to Find Rhythm

Led by captain Ali Zafar Hazara and coached by Shehzad Anwar, Pakistan endured a difficult start as Bangladesh dominated possession and tempo from the opening whistle.

The midfield and defensive lines struggled under pressure, frequently conceding possession and allowing Bangladesh to create multiple early chances.

Despite Bangladesh’s control, the first half ended 0-0, although Pakistan’s discipline was a concern. Four players — Najeeb Ullah, Zarib Haider, Abdul Rehman, and Zain Imran — were booked before the break.

Controversy Denies Pakistan Equaliser

Pakistan showed signs of life after going behind and thought they had equalised when Najeeb Ullah headed home from a diagonal delivery by substitute Syed Abis Raza Kazmi.

However, the goal was controversially ruled out after the referee penalised a foul, despite replays suggesting a collision between Bangladesh goalkeeper Ismail Mahin and his own defender.

The decision proved costly, halting Pakistan’s momentum at a critical stage.

Bangladesh Take Control

Bangladesh, coached by Mark Cox, capitalised on the reprieve and extended their lead soon after. They continued to threaten and could have added more goals as Pakistan struggled to recover.
