In a commanding Group B encounter of the SAFF U-20 Championship 2026 at the National Stadium in Malé, Maldives, on March 26, India’s Under-20 side delivered a clinical performance to defeat Pakistan 3-0. The result not only secured India’s place in the semifinals with a match to spare but also eliminated arch-rivals Pakistan, who had already lost their opening fixture 2-0 to Bangladesh. Vishal Yadav opened the scoring in the third minute, while Omang Dodum struck twice in the second half to seal the victory. The match underscored India’s attacking efficiency and defensive resilience against a Pakistan side that created opportunities but struggled to convert them.

The Match: Early Strike and Second-Half Control

India made an explosive start, taking the lead just three minutes in. Gurnaj Singh Grewal delivered a precise lofted through-ball, and Vishal Yadav controlled it under pressure before finishing neatly at the near post past Pakistan goalkeeper Kashif. Pakistan responded with intent, enjoying periods of possession and creating clear chances, particularly through forward Najeeb Ullah, who tested Indian keeper Suraj Singh Aheibam with a one-on-one effort and multiple shots. Suraj’s sharp saves and a crucial sliding clearance by defender Jodric kept the score at 1-0 heading into halftime.

The second half saw India tighten their grip. Substitutions injected fresh energy, and in the 64th minute, a swift counter-attack involving Samson Ahongshangbam and Rishi Singh Ninthoukhongjam set up Omang Dodum for a perfectly timed header. Pakistan continued to push forward, appealing unsuccessfully for a penalty, but India remained organised. In the 88th minute, Muhammad Junaid’s mistimed tackle on Prashan Jajo inside the box awarded a penalty, which Dodum converted with authority into the top corner for his brace. Pakistan’s late efforts yielded no reward, and the final whistle confirmed their tournament exit. India’s next group match against Bangladesh on March 28 will decide the top spot in Group B.

Social Media Buzz

Reactions on social media reflected the intensity of the India-Pakistan football rivalry, with Indian supporters hailing the win as a dominant display and a statement of intent. Posts celebrated the “unstoppable” Blue Colts, highlighted Punjab FC players among the goalscorers, and noted Pakistan’s elimination after two losses. One user summarised it as “Another Sport Another Humiliation,” capturing the celebratory tone among Indian fans. Pakistani voices expressed disappointment, with some pointing to missed chances by players like Najeeb Ullah and criticising umpiring decisions, though match reports emphasised India’s superior finishing and defensive solidity.

This outcome keeps the SAFF U-20 Championship very much alive for India, while Pakistan will reflect on a challenging campaign.
